Introduction

Silent Saturday was a day of Sabbath rest for the disciples. A day of grief and confusion as they watched their rabbi, their teacher, their master, their savior suffer an excrutiating death of crucifixtion.

The women who had come with him from Galilee followed and saw the tomb and how his body was laid. Then they returned and prepared spices and ointments.

On the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment. -Luke 23:55-56

Meanwhile, The Chief Priests and Pharisees worried that they did just commit the unthinkable and approached Pilate to make sure the disciples did not prove them wrong. Little did they know, nothing would be able to stop the resurrection from happening.

The next day, that is, after the day of Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate and said, “Sir, we remember how that impostor said, while he was still alive, After three days I will rise.’ Therefore order the tomb to be made secure until the third day, lest his disciples go and steal him away and tell the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last fraud will be worse than the first.” Pilate said to them, “You have a guard of soldiers. Go, make it as secure as you can.” So they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone and setting a guard. -Matthew 27:62-66

Tomorrow, we know the stone is rolled away!

Adoration

God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.

Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,

though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble at its swelling. – Psalm 46:1-3

Come, behold the works of the LORD,
how he has brought desolations on the earth.

He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
he breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
he burns the chariots with fire.

“Be still, and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!”

The LORD of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress – Psalm 46:8-11

Oh Father God, you are so glorious, majestic and mighty. Your strength and might to suffer a death for us is unfathomable. Your perfect plan is full of hope! May we honor you and praise your name today.  Amen.

Confession

“O God, you know us well. We are quick to speak of faith, but slow to live it completely. We shout “hosanna” as Jesus approaches, and yet we hold back parts of ourselves from You … O God, you know us well. We are quick to claim faith in Jesus as our Lord and Savior, but we are fickle, slow to live fully as faithful disciples. We know where we fail … O God, you know us well. We are quick to want the blessings of faithfulness, but we are slow to accept the cost of authentic Christlike living. Forgive our weakness and fear … Lord, You are God. You bring light to those in darkness, forgiveness to those who truly confess, and pardon to all who seek to follow Jesus. We rejoice that  Your steadfast love endures forever and ever. In the name of Jesus Christ, we receive the love that never dies and never fails. Amen.” – Missio Dei Confessional.

Thanksgiving

Clap your hands, all peoples!
Shout to God with loud songs of joy!
For the LORD, the Most High, is to be feared,
a great king over all the earth.
He subdued peoples under us,
and nations under our feet. – Psalm 46:1-3

Father God, words can not express how thankful we are for your sacrifice. We thank you for your willingness to face trials, beatings, horrific pain and torture for us while we still continue to sin. You, who knew no sin was willing to die for us-it is breathtaking. Thank you for your willingness to give of yourself to us. May we honor you and share your love with others, Amen.
