Introduction
Holy week starts in two days. As we meditate next week on the horrors that Jesus experienced as we continue our journey to the cross, I thought it might be good to reflect on his reasons for withstanding those horrors. I have heard the love and grace of Christ is as deep as the ocean, but I really do not think that descriptor fully does justice to the love He has for us.
The scriptures are full of reminders of God’s love for us and sometimes I think it is a worthy exercise to just sit and ponder on those love letters from God:
God’s Everlasting Love
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written,
“For your sake we are being killed all the day long;
we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”
No, in all these things we are more than yconquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. – Romans 8:31-39
Or From Ephesians 3:17-19, can we truly even grasp how great His love is for us?
so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
Adoration
Your steadfast love, O LORD, extends to the heavens,
your faithfulness to the clouds.
Your righteousness is like the mountains of God;
your judgments are like the great deep;
man and beast you isave, O LORD.
How precious is your steadfast love, O God!
The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings. – Psalm 36:5-7
Oh father God, your love is like music to us–sweet to the spirit. Your loving kindness is never-ending. We love you Lord! We praise your name! We know you are a loving, compassionate and Holy God! We humbly bow before you in worship and adoration today! Amen.
Confession
“O Father, we are gathered before you, the Maker of Heaven and Earth, whose chosen dwelling place is with the broken and contrite, to confess that we have sinned in thought and word and deed; we have not loved you with all our heart and soul, we have not loved you with all our mind and strength; we have not even loved our neighbor as ourselves. In your mercy, deepen our sorrow for the wrong we have done and for the good we have left undone, so that we may hate our sin with a holy hatred. But, please Father, do not leave us in sorrow. With you, O Lord, there is forgiveness. In your mercy, restore the joy of our salvation; so that we may love you with a holy love. Amen. ” – Missio Dei Confessional.
Thanksgiving
Father God, we humbly come before you today thanking you for your sacrifical love for us. We are so undeserving, Lord. Thank you for dying for us. Thank you for the endless love and compassion you show to us each day. Thank you for shielding us in your love, providing a refuge for us in our time of need. Thank you for loving us all of our days! We love you Lord. In Jesus name, Amen.
Supplication
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. – Philippians 4:6-7
