Introduction
When it comes to examples of love these last couple of weeks, we don’t have to look far, as a simple act of turning on the TV shows the human sacrifice that comes with truly loving someone. We watch as the men of Ukraine have escorted their women to safety and then taken up weapons to protect them. We see women securely guarding children. We see moms dropping to their knees, crying out in prayer.
Abounding in Steadfast Love. To be rich or well supplied with love. To be filled with love. To exist in the greatest numbers or quanitites of love. That is how God describes who He is to us.
The Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord. The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.” And Moses quickly bowed his head toward the earth and worshiped. – Exodus 34:5-8
Adoration
Like Moses and our forefathers before us, we bow in worship to you! Oh Father, you are love! You are Mercy! You are so, so gracious! “You, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness”(Psalm 86:15). We adore you this day and worship you alone. We can hardly fathom a God willing to descend to an earth he created and meet with us to fill us with an unconditional love we do not deserve. Father God, we adore you!
Confession
O Father, “I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,’ and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.” (Psalm 32:5)
“O Father, we are gathered before you, the Maker of Heaven and Earth, whose chosen dwelling place is with the broken and contrite, to confess that we have sinned in thought and word and deed; we have not loved you with all our heart and soul, we have not loved you with all our mind and strength … In your mercy, restore the joy of our salvation; so that we may love you.”- Missio Dei Confessional
Thanksgiving
Oh Majestic Lord, we thank you for your steadfast love and kindness! We thank you for showing yourself to us. We thank you for the ultimate act of love in your sacrifice for us. We thank you that, while we were still sinners, you would in an unimaginable act of love die on a cross for us so that we can have an everlasting life full of steadfast love. We thank you for your abounding love that fills us daily.
Supplication
Incline your ear, O Lord, and answer me,
for I am poor and needy.
Preserve my life, for I am godly;
save your servant, who trusts in you—you are my God.
Be gracious to me, O Lord,
for to you do I cry all the day.
Gladden the soul of your servant,
for to you, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.
For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving,
abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you.
Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer;
listen to my plea for grace.
In the day of my trouble I call upon you,
for you answer me.
There is none like you among the gods, O Lord,
nor are there any works like yours.
All the nations you have made shall come
and worship before you, O Lord,
and shall glorify your name.
For you are great and do wondrous things;
you alone are God.
Teach me your way, O Lord,
that I may walk in your truth;
unite my heart to fear your name.
I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart,
and I will glorify your name forever.
For great is your steadfast love toward me; – Psalm 86:1-13
