Introduction

Whenever one starts a journey, it’s sometimes important to know the magnitude of the journey. When we set out on our journey to the cross through 40 days of prayer, the thought shouldn’t escape us that God will transform your thoughts and actions. It often reminds me of a conversation between Gandolf and Bilbo in The Hobbit:

Gandalf: I am looking for someone to share in an adventure that I am arranging, and it’s very difficult to find anyone.

Bilbo: I should think so—in these parts! We are plain quiet folk and have no use for adventures. Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things! Make you late for dinner! I can’t think what anybody sees in them …

Gandalf:  You’ll have a tale or two to tell when you come back

Bilbo:  You can promise that I’ll come back?

Gandalf:  No. And if you do, you will not be the same

I am sure Moses never expected to be so transformed when he met the Great I AM, but he never again was the same after his first encounter. As he tended his flock and caught sight of a burning bush, it was in this that God chose to get Moses’ attention. Pretty sure that was life-changing. I love how the creator of the heavens, whose very breath created us, who keeps things spinning in just the right orbit, explains to Moses who HE is.

Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?”

God said to Moses, “I am who I am.’”

-Exodus 3:13-14

Adoration

Oh Great I AM, we worship you! May your greatness be known throughout the world! May your name be worshiped from the mountaintops! Oh that all would know your awesome majestic glory! Creator of Heaven and Earth, the great I AM whose breath created us in your image. We adore you!

Come, behold the works of the Lord,how he has brought desolations on the earth.
He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
he breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
he burns the chariots with fire.
“Be still, and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!” -Psalm 46:8-10

Confession

O Father, we confess to you the Great I AM. We continue to allow sin to rule in our lives.

“O Father, we are gathered before you, the Maker of Heaven and Earth, whose chosen dwelling place is with the broken and contrite, to confess that we have sinned in thought and word and deed; we have not loved you with all our heart and soul, we have not loved you with all our mind and strength … In your mercy, restore the joy of our salvation; so that we may love you.”- Missio Dei Confessional
