Introduction

In times of devotions or meditations, we often look to the Psalms. The Psalms offer us so many beautiful aspects of scripture conveniently all located in one book, which often makes it easy to see the glorious redemptive plan of God. Today’s Psalm is no different. Psalm 110 is the most quoted Psalm in the New Testament. Verse 1 appears at least 25 times and verse 4 appears at least 5 times. And who does this Psalm point to? You guessed it— the beautiful Messiah, Jesus Christ!

Sit at My Right Hand
A Psalm of David.

The Lord says to my Lord:
“Sit at my right hand,
until I make your enemies your footstool.”
The Lord sends forth from Zion
your mighty scepter.
Rule in the midst of your enemies!
Your people will offer themselves freely
on the day of your power,
in holy garments;
from the womb of the morning,
the dew of your youth will be yours.
The Lord has sworn
and will not change his mind,
“You are a priest forever
after the order of Melchizedek.”
The Lord is at your right hand;
he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath.
 He will execute judgment among the nations,
filling them with corpses;
he will shatter chiefs
over the wide earth.
He will drink from the brook by the way;
therefore he will lift up his head. – Psalm 110

Psalm 110 is a purely prophetic, Messianic Psalm. It is said that Martin Luther was so moved by this Psalm, he wrote 120 pages of commentary on it. Why is it so important to us? Because it tells the gospel. It tells of Christ, who presented himself as our Lord, from the line of David, as a lamb without blemish to pay for our sin. Jesus was resurrected to the right hand of God to serve as the perfect King-Priest so that we may have eternal life. Doesn’t that make you want to praise him today?

Adoration

Oh Yahweh, your mighty plan is perfect. You alone are worthy of our praise. You alone control all that happens on the earth and beyond. You alone control the kings of this world. Your majestic ways are awesome. We worship and adore you always! May we honor you today! Amen.

Confession

“O Father, we are gathered before you, the Maker of Heaven and Earth, whose chosen dwelling place is with the broken and contrite, to confess that we have sinned in thought and word and deed; we have not loved you with all our heart and soul, we have not loved you with all our mind and strength; we have not even loved our neighbor as ourselves. In your mercy, deepen our sorrow for the wrong we have done and for the good we have left undone, so that we may hate our sin with a holy hatred. But, please Father, do not leave us in sorrow. With you, O Lord, there is forgiveness. In your mercy, restore the joy of our salvation; so that we may love you with a holy love. Amen. ” – Missio Dei Confessional.

Thanksgiving

Praise the LORD!
I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart, in the company of the upright, in the congregation.
Great are the works of the LORD, studied by all who delight in them.
Full of splendor and majesty is his work, and his righteousness endures forever.
He has caused his wondrous works to be remembered; the LORD is gracious and merciful.
He provides food for those who fear him; he remembers his covenant forever.
He has shown his people the power of his works, in giving them the inheritance of the nations.
The works of his hands are faithful and just; all his precepts are trustworthy;
they are established forever and ever, to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness.
He sent redemption to his people; he has commanded his covenant forever.
Holy and awesome is his name! – Psalm 11:1-9

Father God, thank you for for loving us! thank you for your covenant with David! Thank you for your faithfulness, for your steadfast love and neverending promises. Thank you for sending your son to fulfill that covenant to David. Thank you for your goodness to us! In Jesus name, Amen.
